Table Tennis Buying Guide
Everything you need to know to choose the right table tennis bat — from hobby bats to custom-built setups with blades, rubbers and more.
By Racketlon Sports
Before You Buy
Consider your budget, playing style, level of play, brand preference, and what you’d like to achieve — more power, more control, or a mix of both. Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be closer to choosing your ideal bat setup.
💰 Budget
Prices vary across brands, models and shops. Shop around — not all are created equal. Choose a store that specialises in table tennis and can give you the best advice. Service during and after your purchase is vital. More expensive doesn’t always mean better — we’re all individuals with different needs.
🏅 Level of Play
Are you a beginner, intermediate or advanced? Do you play once a week or five times a week? Socially or competitively? If you’re not going to play often, don’t waste too much money — but if you’re playing regularly, get the best bat to suit your game. No expense spared, you’re worth it.
🏷️ Brand Preference
We all have them. Good experiences stick with us, and bad ones steer us away. Stick with what you know, or trust the experts. A good store stocks quality items and stays away from brands that don’t meet their standards. At Racketlon we know from experience, customer feedback and extensive research what NOT to buy. We only stock the best Tibhar, Donic, Andro and Butterfly equipment so you can be sure of your choice.
🎯 What Are You Looking For?
- Defensive player? — A lighter bat is easier for blocking and control.
- Attacking player? — A heavier bat gives more accelerated power.
- Not sure? — Choose a medium weight bat with all-round rubbers to develop your game and ensure correct strokes.
Hobby Bats vs Custom Bats
🏓 Hobby Bats (Pre-Assembled)
For beginners to intermediate players. These come pre-assembled with a blade and 2 rubbers, ready to play. Generally, the more control a bat has the less speed — and the more speed, the less control. Remember: a faster bat isn’t always better. A bat with more control can actually be more effective against very good players.
🔧 Custom Bats (Build Your Own)
Recommended for intermediate to advanced players who want to take their game to the next level. You choose a blade and 2 rubbers (1 red and 1 black).
🎁 Free Assembly at Racketlon: When you purchase a complete setup from us, we assemble your custom bat for free — including lacquering the blade to prevent fibre stripping when changing rubbers, glueing the rubbers, and edge-taping to protect the rubber and blade from chipping.
Understanding Blades
We’ve standardised blade categories into six key specs:
1. Speed
Our ratings go from 3+ (slowest, most defensive) up to 10+ (fastest, absolute attacker).
2. Control
Higher control ratings mean more feel and precision. Defensive blades rate highest for control.
3. Weight
Ranges from 75g (extra light, more control) to 90g+ (heavier, more attacking power).
4. Orientation
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| DEF | Defensive — maximum control, minimal speed |
| ALL- / ALL / ALL+ | All-round — balanced play, from defensive-leaning (ALL-) to slightly offensive (ALL+) |
| OFF- / OFF / OFF+ | Offensive — attacking play, from moderate (OFF-) to maximum attack (OFF+) |
5. Material
Blades range from simple 4-ply wood to 7 and even 11-ply layers using woods like balsa, kiri, koto, and cypress — with carbon layers in between. Carbon creates a quicker, springier reaction from the ball and is found in attacking blades.
6. Stiffness
| Stiffness | Characteristic |
|---|---|
| Flex | Defensive — more feel and touch on the ball |
| Average | All-round — balanced response |
| Stiff | Offensive — quicker reaction, harder shots |
| Very Stiff | Maximum attack — fastest ball response |
Blade Handle Types
- Anatomical (AN) — Double flared with a thick middle section. The least popular style.
- Straight (ST) — Popular among all styles of play and defenders. Ideal for twiddlers (players who rotate the bat during play).
- Flared / Concave (FL) — Allows a loose grip with less risk of the bat slipping. Ideal for loopers.
Understanding Rubbers
We’ve standardised rubber categories into five key specs:
1. Control
Rated from 5 (least control) to 10+ (highest control). A rating of 7–9 is ideal for good average control.
2. Speed
Rated from 4+ (slowest) to 10+ (fastest).
3. Spin
From 10+++ (highest spin possible) down to 4 or anti (short pimple rubber, minimal spin).
4. Orientation
- DEF — Defensive rubbers for control and blocking
- ALL — All-round rubbers for balanced play
- OFF — Offensive rubbers for attacking play
5. Hardness
- Harder rubbers — Less dwell time, ball comes off the bat quicker = faster play
- Softer rubbers — More feel, more contact time = better for all-round game
Rubber Thickness
| Thickness | Characteristic | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| OX (no sponge) | No spring, maximum control | Defensive players |
| 1.7mm – 1.9mm | Less spring, more control | All-round and defensive play |
| 2.0mm – 2.3mm | More spring, more speed | Attacking and offensive play |
Rubber Types
- Inverted (smooth) — Standard rubbers with the smooth side out. Most common type used by the majority of players.
- Short Pimples — Pimply side faces out. Less spin, faster play, good for close-to-table hitters and blockers.
- Long Pimples — Longer pimples on the outside create an opposite spin effect. Ideal for defensive players looking for absolute control and a “trouble” effect on opponents.
- Anti-Spin — Very low friction surface. Neutralises incoming spin. Used by defensive specialists.
Quick Reference — What Setup Do I Need?
| I Am A… | Blade | Rubbers |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Hobby bat (pre-assembled) or ALL blade, light weight, flex | ALL rubbers, soft, 1.7–1.9mm |
| Defensive Player | DEF or ALL- blade, light weight, flex, straight handle | DEF rubbers, soft, OX–1.9mm, long pimples optional |
| All-Rounder | ALL or ALL+ blade, medium weight, average stiffness | ALL rubbers, medium hardness, 1.9–2.0mm |
| Attacking Player | OFF or OFF+ blade, heavier, stiff, carbon layers, flared handle | OFF rubbers, harder, 2.0–2.3mm, high spin |
